About DOTS

Based in Louisiana, DesignOnTheSide is a network of architects, landscape architects, designers, artists, programmers, professors, and students focused on providing a supplementary environment for the exchange and exploration of topics relating to digital design and fabrication.  Louisiana is a unique state with a multitude of design schools, a large professional community, and access to advanced fabrication tools; however, advanced design, fabrication tools, and techniques often fall to the whim of degree requirements, time, and money.  Through frequent tech workshops, design seminars, and DOTS NETwork support, DesignOnTheSide aims to advance design and technical skills in the region, unite talented individuals and professionals into a collaborative network, and provide an opportunity for a collaborative exchange among students, professors, professionals, and fabricators. Events will be led by core tutors that reside within the region as well as invited tutors recognized as leaders in the associated topics.

Tech Workshops

Tech Workshops are designed to be a fast paced, comprehensible, four hour sessions teaching various design methodologies, software, hardware, interfaces and work flows.  Tech Workshop topics will evolve based on community feedback / interests. They will primarily be held on the weekends at various venues across the state depending on workshop size and participants’ location.

Design Seminar

Design Seminars provide a testing ground for members to come together and incorporate the skills and topics covered in the Tech Workshops with their prior expertise. Collaborating with other DOTS members, design professionals, students, and local fabricators, these Design Seminars will be led by core tutors & invited tutors recognized as leaders in the associated topics. The participants will work towards producing resolved design solutions, prototypes, and full scale mock-ups over a weekend or a multi-month charrette.

DOTS NETwork

The DOTS NETwork provides an avenue for members to collaborate at hosted events and access web-based resources such as tutorials, code, and example files.  A forum will soon be provided as an active resource and reference for questions, design problems, and potential collaborations.  The DOTS NETwork aims to serve as the connective tissue between all stages of the profession including their affiliated organizations (AIA,AIAS).
